Hello,

I’m Elena Blagoslavova and I’m an artist.

In 2019, the Exhibition TemperatYRA! was included in the RAAN archive – the network of archives of Russian art of the Garage Museum

The project that I presented at the exhibition was my reflection on the information in the press about numerous violations of the rights of patients in psychiatric clinics during the pandemic. “More than 70 patients and employees of the State Clinical Psychiatric Hospital in the city of N have contracted the coronavirus.” Only after that did the administration begin to work to strengthen the self-isolation regime.

What is the proof that each snowflake is a unique symbol?

I dedicated this work to my deceased aunt, from whom I inherited more than 1000 snowflakes, none of which repeats the previous one. In isolation, she lived in a psychiatric clinic, marking every day with a snowflake, cut from a small piece of paper …

What does my idea of snowflake arts and crafts describe as a symbol when the pandemic just started?

Of course, I began to research the theme of snowflakes, their non-repeating shape in nature, the physical laws of their origin and growth. They have become for me a symbol of fragility, temporality of life, an allegory of cold, winter, Russian identity. After all, Russia in the minds of other countries is, first of all, snow. And then there was vodka, a bear, and a matryoshka. It should be mentioned that I found the snowflakes in a box wrapped in duct tape, on which the words “electric world” were written.

How we make cut out snowflakes

The installation featured 486 snowflakes cut from the paper on 6 canvases and a giant non-medical mask measuring 68×28 inches.

How To Craft Small Snowflakes

Snowflakes (crossed out) Artists, like living beings, are born, live, and die. All living things are characterized by evolution, development, and adaptation. Snowflakes (crossed out) Artists go through a phase of the struggle for their existence in their cycle. For the seed crystal of a snowflake (crossed out) of an artist to grow to a large size, it must soar for a long time, being in a cloud of supercooled water vapor. The environment in which snowflakes are formed (crossed out) by artists is isotropic – there are no preferred directions of movement.

As the artist’s snowflake grows (crossed out), natural selection begins. Dense crystals that do not have “wings” have nothing to keep them in the air. And vice versa, large, developed snowflakes (crossed out) artists fall as if from nowhere, from an almost clear sky, which was freed from excess moisture and left only elite beauties fluttering on their wings like butterflies to grow in its blue abyss. “

So, exploring the looking glass (as in the famous book by Lewis Carroll “Alice in Wonderland) of people placed in psychiatric clinics, I wanted to draw attention to this world closed from prying eyes, which lives by its own rules, like the Universe of an evolutionary process that created intelligent life on Earth. In a book of one of the best “Alice in Wonderland” quotes showing my ideas is:
